Despite the first successes against right-wing fan clubs, the fight against racism at Millerntor, however, was not yet over. On matchday 3 of the 1989/90 season, people on the terraces of Millerntor insulted Nuremberg player Souleyman Sané with the infamous “monkey chant”.
As to stop things like this for good, night long discussions (in the backroom of a Kebab shop) between the editorial staff of Millerntor Roar! – the first FCSP fanzine – and players were held.
The talks resulted is a manifesto against racist slogans, flags and banners. Co-authors are midfielder Peter Knäbel and goalkeeper Volker Ippig. The entire team signed the statement.
The first issue of Millerntor Roar!, published on 23 August 1989, also featured a “Letter to the members of the white master race”. In strong wording, this letter eventually kicked-off further important discussions and marked the birth of a collective engagement against racism at Millerntor.
Souleyman Sané, born in 1961 in Senegal, played as forward for, among others, FC Nuremberg and SC Freiburg, Wattenscheid 09 and the Senegalese national team.
Peter Knäbel played for FC St. Pauli as midfielder from 1988 to 1991. After playing for and coaching other teams, he was “Director Professsional Football” at Hamburger SV from 2014-6.
Volker Ippig did not only contribute to the rise of the “Myth of St. Pauli” with his excellent performances between the posts, but also by his political engagement for Nicaragua, his time as Hafenstrasse occupant and also a legendary appearance in the TV show “Aktuelles Sportstudio” in 1988.
