War in its fabric

THE SHIRT SHOWN HERE is he oldest existing FC St. Pauli football jersey.

It is from the year 1939 – the year, in which the Third Reich starts a war which is going to claim millions of lives. While this top is worn at football matches, the Wehrmacht invades Czecheslovakia, Poland, France, the Soviet Union and other countries, making Germany an occupant. It is a shirt with war in its fabric.

The player(s) wearing this shirt did not see much success. Although FC St. Pauli were usually playing in the highest divisions throughout that time, these divisions, however – unlike today – were just regional ones. Only the final rounds were played on a national level. FC St. Pauli never qualified for them.

(BU: Match snapshot, 1936. During the homegame vs. Victoria (2-2), the Boys in Brown are just conceding Victoria’s opening goal).
