The man who “undermined the defence power”: Peter Jürs

“I was never politically organised. All I was interested in was sport.”

“The people asked me if they could repay me in whatever way and so I said that money would be fine.”

What is more important: the motive or the action?

Peter Jürs possibly saved lives by protecting them from conscription through forging files. To our knowledge, he took money for this. After being betrayed by a greengrocer he was arrested under the charge of “undermining the defence power”, got committed to KZ Neuengamme – and died only five days before Germany’s surrender in a shipping disaster. The portrait of a dramatic life which already took an unchanging turn in World War I.
